Improving Barriers to Type 1 Diabetes Management

Study Name: Diabetes Journey: An Intervention to Improve Adherence Barriers for Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes

Funding: National Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) R01DK121295

Principal Investigator:  Kimberly A. Driscoll, Ph.D.

What are barriers to type 1 diabetes management and how do they impact health? Some people have difficulties with managing their type 1 diabetes because they forget, become distracted, do not have enough time, have trouble figuring out how to fit everything in, or do not want to take care of diabetes anymore. These barriers negatively affect blood glucose levels and A1C.

What is the purpose of Diabetes Journey? The purpose of this research study is to collect information about specific barriers that affect adolescents’ ability to complete type 1 diabetes tasks. Participants will be randomized to one of two treatment groups: Diabetes Journey or Enhance Standard of Care. Intervention to reduce barriers will be tailored to each adolescents’ needs.

Who can participate?

  • Adolescents with type 1 diabetes who are patients at the UF Diabetes Clinic
  • Have type 1 diabetes for at least 1 year
  • Ages 13-17 years old
  • Experiencing Stress/Burnout and Challenges with Time Management/Planning
